Based on the geographical knowledge of the 17th and 18th centuries, this map draws on the legacy of the Dutch cartographers of the time. They used the voyage logs of great transoceanic navigators, such as Barents, Le Maire, Tasman and Roggeveen, to outline shipping routes, oceans and continents. Other cartographic contributions from different origins, but dating back to the same period, enabled remote and cartographically uncertain places, like much of Tartary, the North American sub-polar belt and the eastern coast of Australia, to be added to the design, while leaving a blurred blanket over the 'terra incognita' of the Arctic and Antarctic. The prevalence of Latin toponymy, which gave a universal imprint to cartography, has been maintained. The drawings reproduce the ornamental and mythological motifs of the time. The sailing ships are a copy of those which, after a thousand years of scientific confinement, demonstrated in action that the world is indeed round, leading to the discovery of that geographical three-dimensionality that only a globe can offer to the human eye.
